Many people believe the term 'senior technology' is an oxymoron. Every family can tell stories about an uncle or grandmother who never figured out how to program the old VCR, can't figure out how or why to use a cell phone, and barely uses their new microwave oven. For many, however, those days are gone, and they are very happy!

Technology helps everyone. Sure, much of it is difficult to understand, some is expensive to buy, and still more is even questionable in its need. However, there is so much technology available that has become almost mandatory for every day use that seniors all over have learned to welcome and embrace these choices.

Many seniors do have cell phones now and some of the individuals who have always loved new gadgets have even become dependent on mobile devices that do more than provide telephone communication. It's common now to see seniors checking their Blackberries because their friends and family are Tweeting and texting and emailing them, and they love to be able to keep in touch with distant friends and family members on a regular basis.

Seniors have also grasped lots of the new technology around the house. Grandpa might not have figured out the old VCR, but he now is an expert with TiVo and has learned how to program multiple football games at once. Grandma now programs all her soap operas so she can watch them at her convenience.

Even nursing homes have installed complete video gaming systems in their recreation rooms in order to help residents stay entertained, improve memory, increase social skills, and focus on motor skills.

Even radios are becoming a thing of the past. Seniors are buying up MP3 players and downloading their favorite tunes to listen to as they go on their daily walks or even grocery shop.
